We were contacted by a Paediatric Occupational Therapist to ask if we could support a family with supplying a cot & mattress for a 6 month old baby who was premature and been in hospital since they were born. The cot & mattress was desperately needed for the baby to return home to his family.

Stanway Lakelands Community Centre & Cafe

Employing 5 staff and supported by numerous volunteers, the centre is a hub for all ALB activities, with on site facilities including a café, inclusive playground, sports/activity hall, board room, sensory room and therapy suites. The centre is passionately diverse and inclusive and is run as a commercial enterprise, although also delivers numerous free activities alongside our income generating services and fund raising events.

Community Outreach and Support

We provide continual support to vulnerable individuals or families, particularly those experiencing extreme trauma or crisis, whether from direct requests or referrals. This ranges from supporting abuse victims, those suffering acute poverty, special needs or disability issues and can involve various types of support including provision of household basics (eg furniture/white goods) amongst other assistance, as required. Typically we undertake 2/3 key projects per week typically focussing on domestic abuse.

School Outreach - Mentoring & Counselling

We provide targeted mentoring and counselling to around 30 young people each week across senior schools in Colchester, based on referrals from pastoral leads. Working in partnership with Colchester and North East Essex Youth Enquiry Service (YES), we support those facing behavioural challenges, vulnerability, difficult family backgrounds, or exposure to crime. Alongside one-to-one sessions, we offer signposting to social, sport, and vocational opportunities, and are leading a project to introduce bleed kits and emergency training.

Summer Festival

ALB delivers an annual family festival every year in Colchester Castle park, attracting over 4000 people and headlined by major performers (e.g. Sophie Ellis Bexter, Pixie Lott, Scouting for Girls). The event prides itself again on being diverse and inclusive with pricing designed to be affordable to all wherever possible. The event also provides various amusement activities and refreshments and is acknowledged as a genuinely family friendly/focussed community event, as well as being a strong showpiece for ALB to highlight our activities and increase our reach across our community.
